He was primarily a character actor, a performer who specializes in playing supporting roles rather than just leading ones. This allowed him to portray a wide range of people, from heroes and villains to ordinary, decent men.

Critics noted that he brought an intelligent intensity and authenticity to his work for over 60 years. His ability to move between different social levels and intellectual scales made him an "Everyman" of the screen.

Malden's early life was shaped by his immigrant heritage and hard work. He was born Mladen George Sekulovich on March 22, 1912, in Chicago, Illinois.

His father, Petar, worked in steel mills and as a milkman, while his mother, Minnie, was a Czech seamstress and actress. The family roots traced back to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Malden spoke only Serbian until kindergarten and remained fluent in the language throughout his life. As a teenager, he participated in church plays that focused on his community's Serbian heritage.

To pursue a career in acting, Malden underwent significant personal and professional changes. After high school, he worked in steel mills for three years to support his family.

He eventually sought formal training at the Goodman School in Chicago. Because he lacked funds, he made a deal with the director to earn a full scholarship through performance. At age 22, he changed his name to Karl Malden. He anglicized his first name and used his grandfather's first name as his own. He later regretted this change and often tried to include his real name, Sekulovich, in his movie lines to honor his roots.

His acting career was interrupted by military service during World War II. Malden served as a noncommissioned officer in the 8th Air Force of the United States Army Air Corps.

His character was a widowed police officer with over 20 years of experience. Malden earned four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for this role. He also appeared in television movies, such as a 1981 account of the 1980 Winter Olympics. This period solidified his status as a versatile performer capable of leading a long-running series.

Beyond his acting, Malden was active in the professional community. He served as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1989 to 1992. He also demonstrated a commitment to education by helping establish the Karl Malden Theater Scholarship at Emporia State University. This scholarship continues to be awarded today. His life and career bridged the gap between the gritty realism of mid-century theater and the massive scale of Hollywood cinema. He remained a respected figure in the industry until his death in 2009.
