Learning to make whiskey was a big part of Jack's life. When he was a boy, he worked for a man named Dan Call. Some stories say Call taught him how to use a still. A still is a tool used to make whiskey. Other stories say he learned from a man named Nearest Green. Green was one of Call's slaves. This is how Jack learned the craft of distilling.

Jack's business had a long and changing history. The company says they were licensed in 1866. However, other records show the distillery started in 1875. That year, Jack and Dan Call formed a partnership. They named their company Daniel & Call. This marked Jack's official entry into the business. He worked hard to make the distillery successful.

Jack Daniel had a very busy life in Tennessee. He never married or had any children of his own. Instead, he helped his nephews with the family business. One nephew was named Lemuel Motlow. Lem was very good with numbers. He did the bookkeeping for the distillery. In 1893, a sad event happened on Jack's farm. A group of men killed four Black citizens there. This was a very difficult time for the community.

In his later years, Jack's health began to fail. By 1907, he gave the business to his nephews. Jack died on October 9, 1911. He died from blood poisoning, which is also called sepsis. Some people tell a story about him kicking a safe. They say he hurt his toe while trying to open it. A biographer says this story is likely not true. He actually died from a different kind of infection.
