Jack Daniel was a famous man from Tennessee. He was a distiller, which is a person who makes whiskey. He started the Jack Daniel's distillery. No one knows his exact birth date. Some say he was born in 1846. Others say it was 1849 or 1850.

As a boy, Jack worked for a man named Dan Call. Some stories say Call taught him to use a still. A still is a tool used to make whiskey. Other stories say he learned from a man named Nearest Green. Jack never married or had children. He did help his nephews with the business. One nephew, Lem Motlow, helped with the math and books.

In 1907, Jack was not feeling well. He gave the business to his nephews. Jack died on October 9, 1911. He died from blood poisoning. This is when an infection spreads through the blood. Some people tell a story about him kicking a safe. They say he got hurt while trying to open it. However, his biographer says this story is not true.
