These movies used only pictures and music instead of spoken words. He was born in the Russian Empire in a place called Kondol. His father was an estate manager for a noble family. Ivan did not follow his brothers into the church. Instead, he studied law at Moscow State University. He left his studies in 1910 to join traveling actors. This work helped him build a strong reputation on stage.

Ivan's acting career in Russia included many famous stories. He starred in movies based on books by authors like Tolstoy and Pushkin. One of his early roles was in the 1913 film *The Night Before Christmas*.

He also worked in a film called *Nikolay Stavrogin* in 1915. A very important part of film history involves his face. A man named Lev Kuleshov used footage of Ivan to show the Kuleshov Effect. This experiment showed how film editing changes how we see emotions. It proved that the way shots are put together matters deeply.

In 1917, Ivan and his film company left Russia for Crimea. They later traveled through Ottoman Turkey to reach Paris.

This difficult journey was recorded in the film *The Harrowing Adventure*. Once in France, Ivan became a huge star of the silent era. He was known for being tall, handsome, and mysterious. He often worked with his wife, the actress Nathalie Lissenko. He even wrote and directed his own movies in the 1920s. One film, *Le Brasier ardent*, used strange sets to test how people see reality.

Ivan eventually tried to become a star in Hollywood, USA. Universal studios signed him to act in American films. They thought he might be like the famous actor Rudolph Valentino. However, his 1927 film *Surrender* did not become a big hit. He was not the main star in that movie. The film also did not have much chemistry between the actors. At the same time, a new kind of movie arrived. *The Jazz Singer* introduced sound to the cinema. This change made it hard for silent stars to keep working.

Because of his heavy Russian accent, Ivan could not easily act in "talkies." These were the new movies with spoken dialogue. He decided to return to Europe to continue his work. He spent his later years acting in German and French films. He often played characters with a Russian background. Ivan died in January 1939. His brother Alexander was also a famous opera singer. Much of Ivan's family history is kept in special archives today.
