She was the very first big star of Imperial Russian cinema. People often called her the "Queen of the Screen." Audiences were fascinated by her large gray eyes and her fancy costumes. She became a real phenomenon in the film world. Her presence on the screen was mysterious and very special to viewers. Many people across Russia loved watching her movies.

Acting was a craft that Vera worked hard to learn. At first, she found it difficult to show complex feelings. She began by imitating the acting style of Asta Nielsen. Over time, she developed her own unique way of performing. She worked with many famous directors like Yevgeni Bauer and Pyotr Chardynin. One of her big hits was a film called "A Life for a Life." This movie helped make her a true star of the era.

Vera's life began in Poltava in the Russian Empire.

As a young girl, she dreamed of doing classical ballet. She even went to the Bolshoi Theatre ballet school to study. Later, she decided to try acting in movies instead. She met her husband, Vladimir Kholodny, at a graduation prom. They married in 1910 and had a daughter named Evgeniya. They also adopted a girl named Nata in 1913.

Her career grew even during the hard times of World War I. Vera helped soldiers by holding charity concerts. She sold gifts to raise money for soldiers and their families. The soldiers loved her so much they called her "our Verochka." Even during the Russian Revolution, her films remained very popular. Some of her movies, like "By the Fireplace," were huge commercial successes. These films sometimes broke all the records for movies made in Russia.

Sadly, Vera died at the age of 25 in 1919. Official records say she died from the Spanish flu pandemic.
