These were movies without sound. He was born in the Russian Empire. He studied law at a big university. Later, he joined a group of traveling actors. He gained a reputation for his great stage presence.

Ivan moved to France after a war in Russia. He became a top star in French cinema. He was tall and handsome. Many people saw him as a mysterious hero. He even wrote and directed his own films. One film, *Le Brasier ardent*, used new ideas to play with how people see reality.

Later, Ivan went to Hollywood in America. He tried to be a star there too. However, his films did not do as well as people hoped. New movies with sound also arrived. Ivan had a strong Russian accent. This made it hard to act in these new "talkies." He went back to Europe to finish his career. He worked in German and French films for many years.
