It connects the Crimean Peninsula to the main land of Ukraine. This narrow piece of earth sits between two bodies of water. To the west lies the Black Sea. To the east is a place called the Syvash. Because it is so narrow, it acts like a bridge. This makes it a gateway to the whole Crimea region.

Many different people have lived and worked on this land. Several towns sit right on the isthmus. These include Perekop, Armiansk, Suvorove, Voloshyne, and Krasnoperekopsk. The land is also used for business. In the south, there are rich salt ores. These are very important to the local area.

A canal once ran through this area too. The North Crimean Canal brought fresh water from the Dnieper River to Crimea. Ukraine closed this canal in 2014. Now, the area uses other local and Russian water sources.

The name of this place tells a story about its shape. In Greek, the name Taphros means a dug-out trench. This might refer to an old defensive trench. The Crimean Tatar name is Or Qapı. This name uses the word for trench and the word for gate. In Slavic languages, Perekop means a dug-out.

All these names hint at how the land was used for defense.

Because it is a gateway, many fierce battles happened here. Long ago, the Greeks and the Crimean Tatars built forts. In 1783, it became part of the Russian Empire. In 1920, a battle took place during the Russian Civil War. Many people had to flee across the sea to Istanbul. During World War II, German and Romanian troops fought for five days in 1941. They entered Crimea through this isthmus. The Red Army later regained control in 1944.

Today, the isthmus is still a very important place. A border runs through the northern part of the land. This border is between Ukraine's Kherson Oblast and Crimea. Since 2014, this has been a de facto border. In 2022, Russian forces crossed this frontier during an invasion.
