It connects Crimea to the main land of Ukraine. To the west is the Black Sea. To the east is the Syvash.

This place is a gateway to Crimea. Because of this, many battles happened here. Long ago, Greeks and Tatars built forts. In 1941, German and Romanian troops fought for five days to enter. Later, the Red Army took control again in 1944.

Several towns sit on this land. These include Perekop and Armiansk. A canal once ran through the area. It brought fresh water from the Dnieper River to Crimea. Ukraine closed this canal in 2014. Now, Crimea uses other water sources.

The land is also useful for salt. Rich salt ores are in the south. This salt is important for business in the region. The name Perekop means a dug-out. It comes from a word for a trench.
