Some people have a big idea about how life began.

They call this idea intelligent design. They believe that life is too complex to happen by chance. Instead, they think a smart maker must have made it.

This idea is like an old religious argument. Long ago, thinkers like Thomas Aquinas and William Paley used similar ideas. Paley used a watch as an example. He said a watch needs a maker. He thought nature was just like that watch.

Today, many people use the term intelligent design. Some say it is a science. But many other people disagree. They say it is actually a form of creationism. Creationism is the belief that a god made the world.

In 2005, a court looked at this in a big trial. The court ruled that intelligent design is not science. They said it is a religious belief. Because of this, it cannot be taught in public school science classes. Leaders of this movement often work with a group called the Discovery Institute. They want to change how science is taught in schools.
