Intelligent design is a specific idea about how life began.

People who support this idea call it an evidence-based theory. They believe that life is too complex to happen by chance. Instead, they argue that a smart maker must have designed it. Many people see this as a way to find evidence for a god. However, most scientists do not agree with this view. They say it is not a real science because it cannot be tested.

This idea uses two main arguments to challenge evolution. The first is called irreducible complexity. This is the idea that some living things are too complicated to function if one part is missing. The second idea is called specified complexity. This idea looks at the information found in DNA. Supporters say this information looks like a message from a designer. They compare natural systems to things humans make, like tools.

This way of thinking is actually very old. In the 13th century, Thomas Aquinas used a logical argument for a designer. Later, in 1802, William Paley wrote about this too. He used a famous example of a watch. He said a watch needs a maker, so nature must need a designer too. Modern supporters use these old ideas in new ways. They often try to use the term intelligent design instead of creationism.

In the United States, there have been many legal battles about this. In 1987, a court ruled that creation science was religious. After that, a textbook called Of Pandas and People changed its words. It replaced "creation science" with "intelligent design." In 2005, a big trial happened in Dover, Pennsylvania. This was the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District case. The court ruled that intelligent design is not science. They said it is a religious belief and cannot be taught in public school science classes.

Today, the movement is led by groups like the Discovery Institute.

This group is based in the United States. They want to change how science is taught in schools. Some leaders, like Phillip E. Johnson, have shared strategies for this work. They want to focus on how information is built in life. While they avoid using Bible verses in public, many supporters believe the designer is the Christian God. This remains a major topic of debate between different groups.
