For a long time, some people used bad science to sort humans. They called this idea scientific racism.

They believed humans were divided into different biological races. They claimed some groups were better or smarter than others.

In the 1600s, a man named François Bernier wrote about this. He used skin color to group people.

He thought people from different places were different species. Another scientist, Robert Boyle, thought all humans had one source. He believed everyone came from Adam and Eve.

These ideas were used to treat people unfairly. They helped some groups hold power over others. This caused much harm and suffering in the world.

By the mid-1900s, scientists began to speak up. They showed these ideas were not true.

Modern studies of genes prove these old ideas wrong. Today, we know that race is a social idea. It is not a biological fact. All humans belong to one single species.
