A man named Francis Galton first used this term in 1883. He believed people could improve human quality through control. This movement grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It spread to many places like the United Kingdom and the United States.

There were two main ways people practiced eugenics. Positive eugenics tried to help people with "good" traits have more children. Negative eugenics tried to stop others from having children. This was often done through forced medical steps like sterilization.

These ideas were used to treat many people unfairly. Some leaders used them to justify racism. This led to very sad and harmful events in history.

Many people spoke out against these ideas. They argued that all humans are born equal. Today, science is used differently. Doctors help families with genetic testing. Now, the focus is on helping parents make their own choices.
