Eugenics is a set of ideas about how to change human traits.

Some people believed they could improve the quality of human life. They wanted to control which traits were passed down to children. This movement grew very fast in the late 1800s. It eventually spread to many countries like the United Kingdom and the United States.

It also reached places like Canada, Australia, and Sweden. Many people thought these ideas were a way to help society. Today, we know these beliefs were often wrong and very harmful.

There were two main ways that people practiced eugenics. The first way was called positive eugenics. This aimed to help people with "good" traits have more children. These traits might include being healthy or successful.

The second way was called negative eugenics. This aimed to stop people with "undesirable" traits from having children. This was done through things like marriage rules or forced medical steps. Some of these steps were very unfair and caused great suffering. These methods were used to control many different groups of people.

History shows that these ideas have been around for a long time.

An old story says that leaders in ancient Sparta inspected every baby. They supposedly decided if a child was fit to live. However, modern researchers have found little physical evidence for this. In the late 1800s, the modern study of eugenics truly began. A man named Francis Galton first used the word in 1883. He was a British scientist who studied how traits are inherited. He believed humans could use science to improve their own future.

By the early 1900s, eugenics became a very large movement.

Many universities and groups supported these ideas. The American Eugenics Society was formed in 1921. The British Eugenics Education Society started in 1907. Some powerful leaders, like Winston Churchill, even supported these groups. Sadly, these ideas were also used to support racism. Some people used eugenics to argue for a "pure" race. This led to terrible things, including forced sterilizations and genocide. Many countries used these laws to treat people very poorly.

Not everyone agreed with these ideas from the start.

People like Lester Frank Ward spoke out against them. Other scientists and writers argued that all humans are born equal. They believed that eugenics was a mistake. Today, science works in a much different way. We now use medical genetics to help families. Doctors use genetic testing to give parents information. This is called "new eugenics" because it focuses on individual choice. It is about helping people, not forcing them to act a certain way.
