White supremacy is the belief that white people are better than other races. This idea was used to keep power and special rights for white people.

In the past, some people used bad science to back these ideas. They claimed race could explain human history. This was used to justify many unfair things. For example, it was used during European colonialism. In the United States, many laws were made to keep groups apart. The Virginia Slave Codes of 1705 separated white and Black people. Many wealthy white Southerners also owned slaves. They used these false ideas to justify treating Black people poorly.

These ideas led to many hard times. In the South, four million slaves were denied freedom. Some leaders even said the new government was just for the white race.

Laws also stopped people from marrying if they were of different races. Many people were kept from voting or having good jobs. Later, the civil rights movement fought to change these rules. In 1967, the Supreme Court ruled that interracial marriage must be legal. Today, some groups still hold these old ideas. But many more people now work for fairness and equality.
