Supremacism is the belief that one group is better than others. This group thinks they should have power over everyone else. People use many traits to define these groups. They might use race, religion, or even language.

This idea has appeared in many places. In ancient India, some people saw foreigners as impure. In China, writers sometimes called outsiders barbarians. In Japan, leaders used ideas of a "master race" to justify taking over other lands. They even used human zoos to show others were not as good as them.

In the United States, white supremacism was used to justify slavery. Some leaders wrote that Black people were not equal. After the Civil War, a group called the Ku Klux Klan used fear to keep power. In Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler used the idea of an "Aryan" master race. This idea was used to treat Jewish, Slavic, and Romani people very poorly.

Other groups have also held these views. In Africa, some people in Sudan face Arab supremacy. In America, some Black Muslim views arose to counter white supremacy. These beliefs have caused much unfairness and conflict in history.
