Oppression is when people are treated in an unfair way.

This often happens to a whole group of people. One way this happens is through a government. Some leaders use their power to control others. They may use secret police or harsh rules. They might stop people from speaking freely. This can make people feel very afraid.

Oppression can also happen in a society. It can be based on race, gender, or money. For example, some groups may have less power. They might have fewer choices in life. This is sometimes called a "double-bind." This means that no matter what a person does, they might face a penalty.

Some people have what is called "privilege." Privilege means having special benefits that others do not have. Often, people with privilege do not even notice it. This makes unfairness hard to stop.

Some thinkers say all unfairness is linked. They believe we must work to change the rules for everyone.
