This article covers sensitive topics: politics. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

Political repression is when a state uses force to control people. Leaders do this for political reasons. They want to stop people from joining political life. This helps the leaders stay in power.

There are two main ways this happens. Direct repression is very open. People see the harm being done to others. This can include things like jail or violence. Indirect repression is more hidden. It uses threats to make people feel afraid. This might include watching people through cameras or wiretapping.

In some places, the government uses many tools to watch citizens. China uses big data and facial recognition. This helps them monitor many people at once. In other places, leaders use the law to stop rivals. For example, leaders in Russia and Myanmar have put political opponents in jail. This can keep those people out of politics.

Repression can lead to very bad things. It can cause crimes against humanity. Some groups use it to make people feel they have no choice. This can make it hard for people to work together for change.
