Freedom

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Freedom is the power to act and speak. It means you can change things as you wish. Many people think of freedom as a right. In many nations, people have rights like freedom of speech. They also have freedom of religion. This means they can choose what they believe.

Some people use the word liberty too. These two words often mean the same thing. But some thinkers see a difference. One thinker, John Stuart Mill, said freedom is about power. He said liberty is about having no unfair rules. Liberty must also respect the rights of others.

There are also two ways to look at liberty. One way is called negative liberty. This means you can act without things stopping you. The other way is positive liberty. This means you can reach your own goals.

In history, freedom has been a big fight. Some people were treated as slaves. This was not fair. Many people worked to make things equal. They wanted all groups to be free. This includes all races and genders.
