Inland taipan

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The inland taipan is a very special snake from Australia.

It lives in the dry, semiarid parts of central east Australia. Some people call it the western taipan or the small-scaled snake. It is also known as the fierce snake. This name describes its strong venom rather than its personality. The snake is actually quite shy and reclusive. It usually prefers to hide and escape from trouble.

It only strikes if it is provoked or cannot get away.

The snake's venom is incredibly powerful. Experts say it is the most toxic venom of any snake in the world. It is specially made to hunt mammals. This means it is adapted to kill warm-blooded animals like mice. Scientists use a test called LD50 to measure how strong venom is. In these tests on mice, the inland taipan is the winner. Its venom is even more potent than the venom of many sea snakes. One single bite has enough venom to kill more than 100 men.

For a long time, this snake was a big mystery to scientists. Frederick McCoy first described the snake in 1879. Later, William John Macleay described a specimen in 1882. For the next 90 years, no one could find any more. It was as if the snake had disappeared. Everything changed in September 1972. Herpetologists Jeanette Covacevich and Charles Tanner went to southwest Queensland to find it. They found 13 living snakes at a site near Windorah.

There are many interesting facts about how this snake works. It is a very fast and agile hunter. When it attacks, it can strike with extreme accuracy. The snake often strikes multiple times during a single attack. It almost always injects its venom during these strikes. The venom can affect the body in different ways. It can cause neurotoxic paralysis in two to four hours. It can also cause coagulopathy within just 30 minutes.

You can think of the inland taipan as a specialist. Just as a tool is made for one specific job, this snake is made for hunting mammals. Its venom is a highly tuned tool for that task. Even though it is deadly, it does not live near many people. Because it lives in remote places, it is not the deadliest snake for humans. Most people will never meet one in person. It remains a fascinating part of the Australian wild.
