They belong to a group of snakes called elapids. These snakes are known for being extremely venomous. There are three different species of taipan in the world. One is the inland taipan. Another is the coastal taipan, which has two subspecies. The third is the Central Ranges taipan. This last species was only recently discovered. These snakes are some of the deadliest animals on Earth.

Taipans use venom to hunt small mammals like rats and bandicoots.

Their venom is neurotoxic, which means it affects the nervous system. This can cause a victim to become paralyzed. The venom also has other effects on the body. It causes blood to clot very quickly. This clotting can block blood vessels. The inland taipan is the most venomous snake in the world. The coastal taipan is the third-most venomous snake in the world. Scientists use mice to measure how toxic the venom is.

People have studied these snakes for a long time.

The name "taipan" comes from the Wik-Mungkan people. They are an Aboriginal group from the Cape York Peninsula. They used the name for the Rainbow Serpent in their mythology. The scientific name, Oxyuranus, comes from Greek words. It refers to a needle-like shape in the snake's mouth. An amateur scientist named Kevin Budden captured a live taipan in 1950. Sadly, he was bitten and died the next day.

Learning about taipan venom has helped save many lives.

In the 1950s, experts David Fleay and Dr. F. C. Morgan milked a snake for its venom. They used this venom to create an antivenom. An antivenom is a medicine that helps people after a bite. Today, CSL Limited in Australia makes two types of this medicine. One is called CSL polyvalent antivenom. The other is CSL taipan antivenom. In 1949, a man named George Rosendale survived a bite without any medicine.

Every taipan species has a different personality.

The inland taipan is usually a shy snake. However, the coastal taipan can be quite aggressive. It may fight back if it feels cornered. The coastal taipan is also one of the largest venomous snakes in Australia. Because it is so big, it can inject a lot of venom at once. You can think of the venom like a key that stops a machine from working. It changes how the body functions very quickly.
