Mambas are a group of very fast and venomous snakes.

They live in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. There are four different species of mambas known today. Three of these species are green in color. These green mambas are arboreal, which means they live in trees.

The black mamba is quite different from the others. It is mostly terrestrial, meaning it lives on the ground. This snake is usually brown or grey in color.

Many people in Africa have legends and stories about them.

Mambas are active hunters during the day. They look for birds, lizards, and small mammals to eat. Some species, like the black mamba, sleep in a lair at night. A mamba might stay in the same lair for many years. When they feel threatened, they show a special display. They may rear up, hiss, and open their mouths.

The black mamba has a black mouth. This makes its warning look even more noticeable to others. They usually use their great speed to run away from danger.

Scientists have studied these snakes for a long time. A German naturalist named Hermann Schlegel first described the genus in 1848. The name Dendroaspis comes from Greek words. It means "tree shield" or "tree snake." This refers to their ability to live in trees. In 1936, a researcher named Leo Brongersma helped fix the name. He pointed out the correct way to spell the genus. Later, in 1962, Robert Mertens also helped clear up name confusion. This helped scientists talk about these snakes more clearly.

Black mambas are the longest venomous snakes in Africa. They can reach up to 14 feet in length. Most black mambas are about 8.2 feet long. They are also incredibly fast. They can slither at speeds of 12.5 miles per hour.

Their venom is very strong and contains many parts. These parts include neurotoxins and cardiotoxins. These can cause dizziness, fatigue, or even paralysis. Doctors use a special medicine called antivenom to help. This medicine can treat someone quickly after a bite.

Learning about mambas helps us understand how nature works. Even though they have a scary reputation, they often avoid humans. Most stories of mambas chasing people happen by mistake. The snake is often just trying to get back to its lair. They are much more afraid of humans than we are of them. Many people think they are more common than they really are. In fact, other snakes like the puff adder cause more bites. Mambas are simply very fast and very good at hiding.
