People have used these for a long time. Ancient Egyptians used minerals for color. Romans used olive oil and beeswax.

Some products use special parts to look shiny. This is called pearlescence. It is a glow or shine effect. One way to make this is using mica. Mica is a natural mineral. Makers cover it with titanium dioxide. This is a white mineral.

This coating changes how light hits the mineral. It makes the color look different. Some nail polishes use tiny fish scales to shine too.

Lipstick is another common product. In ancient Babylon, people crushed jewels for color. Today, many lipsticks use synthetic colors. These are colors made by people in a lab. In the US, the FDA tests these colors. They check to make sure they are pure. Most lipsticks use a wax base. They also use castor oil. This oil helps make the lipstick smooth.
