Most lipstick is made from wax and oil. Some types use minerals for texture. People have used lip color for a very long time. About 5,000 years ago, people in Sumer used crushed gems.

In ancient Egypt, people used crushed bugs to make red dye. This dye was called carmine. Some people used fish scales to make lips shine.

In the 1800s, lipstick was not common for everyday use. Many people thought it was only for actors. In 1870, a company called Guerlain made the first lipstick sticks. They got the idea from making candles. Later, new tubes were made. In 1923, a man named James Bruce Mason Jr. made a tube that twists up.
