People have used eye makeup for a very long time. In ancient Egypt, people used a dark powder called kohl. They used it on their lashes and eyebrows. They believed it protected their souls from evil spirits.

In the 1800s, people made their own mascara at home. They mixed ash with berry juice. It was very messy to use. Later, a chemist named Eugène Rimmel made a new kind. He used petroleum jelly to make it. Around the same time, Thomas Lyle Williams made a similar product. He started a business called Maybelline for his sister.

In 1957, Helena Rubinstein changed how we use it. She made a cream version in a tube.
