People use it to make their lashes look darker, thicker, or longer. It can also help define each individual hair. Most modern mascara comes as a liquid inside a small tube. This tube includes a tiny brush or wand to apply the product. Some people even use it on their eyebrows to add color.

It is a popular way for people to express their personal style.

Making mascara involves mixing several different ingredients together. Most formulas use a base of pigments, oils, and waxes. Pigments like iron oxides provide colors like black, brown, or red. Titanium dioxide is another common pigment that adds white color. Waxes such as beeswax or paraffin help the product hold its shape. Oils like castor oil or linseed oil are also added. To make it easy to use, manufacturers use two main ways. One way mixes everything together while it is hot. The other way mixes water and thickeners first to create an emulsion.

People have been decorating their eyes for thousands of years. Around 4000 BC, people in ancient Egypt used a substance called kohl. They made kohl from things like charcoal, soot, or malachite. Both men and women used it on their lashes and eyelids. They believed it could protect their souls from evil spirits. This tradition of using kohl spread to the Babylonian, Greek, and Roman empires. Even after the Roman Empire fell, the practice continued in the Middle East. It remained a very important part of life and religion there.

Modern mascara changed a lot during the 19th century. A chemist named Eugène Rimmel used petroleum jelly to create a new version. At the same time, Thomas Lyle Williams made a product for his sister. He started a business in 1917 called Maybelline. Later, Helena Rubinstein helped make mascara more popular in America. In 1957, she created a cream version that came in a tube.
