Infanticide is the intentional killing of infants or young offspring. Throughout much of human history, this was a widespread practice. Many societies used it to manage their populations. They often did this to save resources for stronger children. Some groups used it to decide which children would live. This helped them ensure their lands could support everyone.

There were many different ways this happened. Some people practiced child sacrifice to gods or supernatural forces. This was famously seen in ancient Carthage. In other places, people used abandonment. They would leave an infant in the wild to die from exposure. This meant the child might face hunger or cold. In some parts of the world, other methods were used too.

This practice goes back to the very beginning of human history. During the Stone Age, it was a routine part of life. Some experts believe it happened to 15 to 50 percent of all births. These high rates lasted until the Neolithic Revolution brought farming. In ancient Greece, fathers often made the choice to expose a child. In Rome, a family leader called a pater familias decided.

Specific details show how different cultures acted. In Carthage, archaeologists found hundreds of infant burial urns. In ancient Egypt, the religion actually forbade infanticide. Egyptians often rescued abandoned babies from manure heaps. They would then adopt them or raise them as slaves. In China, killing male babies became rare by the Ming dynasty. However, killing female babies became more common during the One-Child Policy.

Over time, laws and religions changed how people acted. Christianity forbade the practice from its earliest days. In the 4th century, leaders Constantine the Great and Valentinian I banned it. Islam also prohibited it in the 7th century. Today, infanticide is generally illegal in most places. It is very rare in industrialized countries. Most modern societies work hard to protect all children.
