There are many reasons why a family might act this way. Sometimes a woman refuses an arranged marriage. She might also want a divorce or a separation from her husband. Some people are targeted for changing their religion. Others might be punished for how they dress. Even being a victim of a crime like rape can lead to this. Men can also be victims of honor killings. This might happen if they are seen as having the wrong kind of relationship.

These acts are often planned by several people. A family might hold a formal meeting called a family council. They use the threat of death to control how people behave. Sometimes, families ask children to commit the crime. They do this to try to get a better result in court. In some places, these murders happen in public. This is done to warn others in the community.

History shows that these ideas have existed for a long time. In Ancient Rome, a father could kill a daughter for her actions. In medieval Europe, some laws required stoning for certain people. Today, these killings happen in many different parts of the world. They are common in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. They also happen in the Philippines, East Africa, and Latin America. Even countries like Canada and the United States have reported them.

Many groups work hard to stop this violence. The United Nations estimates that 5,000 women and girls are killed this way each year. International groups and laws, like the Istanbul Convention, condemn these murders. Human rights organizations work to protect everyone's right to live. They want to make sure that people are not punished for their personal choices. They fight to make the world a safer place for everyone.
