Domestic violence is a serious type of harm that happens in a home.

It can happen between partners in a marriage or people living together. It also includes violence against other family members like children, parents, or siblings. This harm is not always physical hitting or beating. It can also be verbal, emotional, or financial. Some people use technology to track or control others. This is often called domestic abuse when it includes these non-physical ways of hurting people.

There are many different ways that domestic abuse can look. It can range from subtle control to very violent acts. Some forms include choking, beating, or using acid to cause injury. There are also specific types of violence like honor killings or dowry deaths. In some places, people may use religious or reproductive reasons to control others. This can create a cycle where tension rises, violence happens, and then things seem calm again.

Victims may feel trapped by fear, shame, or a lack of money. They might also stay to protect their children or because they feel isolated.

History shows that laws used to be very different regarding the home. In the early 1800s, many legal systems saw wife-beating as a husband's right. For example, a 1824 Mississippi court case called State v. Bradley supported this idea. In the UK, old laws treated these acts as a breach of peace against the community. This meant the harm was seen as a problem for the town, not the individual woman. Many people believed that what happened in a family was a private matter.

Over time, people worked hard to change these unfair rules. In 1850, Tennessee became the first US state to outlaw wife-beating. By 1871, courts in Alabama and Massachusetts began to change their minds. The UK passed the Matrimonial Causes Act in 1878 to help women seek legal separation. In 1973, Jack Ashley used the modern term "domestic violence" in the UK Parliament. Later, the United Nations published a manual in 1993 to help countries treat this as a crime.

Today, we can see how these issues connect to fairness in the world. Research shows that countries with less gender equality often have higher rates of violence. The World Health Organization estimates that one in three women will face domestic violence in her life. Many countries are now making new laws to protect people. For example, India passed a law in 2005 to stop dowry violence.

Groups like the Council of Europe use the Istanbul Convention to fight this harm. These efforts aim to make sure every home is a safe place for everyone.
