Infanticide is the intentional killing of infants. This was a common practice for much of human history. Many groups did this to manage their numbers. They wanted to save resources for those who were stronger.

In the Stone Age, some groups practiced this routinely. Experts think it happened to 15 to 50 percent of babies. In ancient times, people used different ways to do this. Some left babies in the wild to die. Others gave babies to gods as sacrifices. This happened in places like ancient Carthage.

In Greece and Rome, fathers often made the choice. They might leave a baby out in the open. They hoped a stranger or a god would find it.

Over time, rules began to change. Christianity and Islam both forbade the practice. In the 4th century, leaders banned it in the Roman Empire. In China, it was rare for boys by the Ming dynasty. However, it became more common for girls during the One-Child Policy. Today, most countries have laws to protect infants.
