He was a doctor who studied the mind, also called a psychoanalyst. He was also a famous writer. He was born in 1895 in a place called Vitebsk. At that time, it was part of the Russian Empire. He grew up in a wealthy Jewish family. He was a very good student in math and language. He even won a gold medal for his schoolwork in 1913.

Velikovsky spent many years studying and traveling. He studied medicine in France and in Scotland. Later, he moved to Berlin to work with scientific papers. He even worked with the famous scientist Albert Einstein. In 1924, he moved to Palestine to work as a doctor. He studied how the mind works under a student of Sigmund Freud. He wrote many papers about medicine during this time. In 1939, he moved his family to New York City to stay safe from war.

Once in America, Velikovsky began to write about space. He had a new idea about how planets move. He believed that planets like Venus and Mars came very close to Earth. He thought these close calls caused huge changes in our world. He used old stories and the Bible to help explain this. He also thought the dates for ancient Egypt and Greece were different. He wanted to fix the timing of history to match these stories.

His most famous book was called Worlds in Collision. It was published in 1950 and became a huge bestseller. However, many scientists did not like his ideas. They called his work pseudoscience, which means it is not real science. One astronomer named Harlow Shapley even tried to stop the book from being sold. This big fight between Velikovsky and the experts is called the "Velikovsky affair."

Even though experts rejected him, many regular people loved his books. He traveled to many places to speak to very large crowds.

Velikovsky spent his later years defending his ideas. He gave many talks in North America and Europe. He even appeared on television shows in Canada and the United Kingdom. He died in 1979 after a long life of writing. His two daughters, Shulamit and Ruth, looked after his papers for many years. Eventually, his entire collection of writings went to Princeton University.
