It sits in the Cordillera Real, which is a mountain range part of the Andes. The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world. The mountain sits in a very special spot. To the west is the high and dry Altiplano plateau. To the east are the deep and wet valleys of the Yungas region. This location creates many different types of weather and environments. The western slopes are cold and dry. The eastern side is more like a subtropical highland. This area is part of the central Andean wet puna. Because of this, many living things live here that like cool, wet weather.

Long ago, the mountain was formed by moving plates of the Earth. The Nazca plate moved under the South American plate. This movement caused the rocks to fold and rise up. Most of the mountain is made of metamorphic rock and granodiorite. The mountain has four main peaks in a north-south line. The southernmost peak is the highest of them all. Its snowy peaks stay white all year long. Some think the name Illimani means "place of light" because the snow reflects the sun.

People have tried to climb Illimani for a long time. In 1877, Charles Wiener and his team reached a smaller peak. They named it "Pic de Paris" and left a French flag. In 1898, William Martin Conway and two guides made the first recorded climb. The most common path today goes up the west ridge. This climb usually takes four days to finish. Many climbers love this mountain because it is a great challenge. About 60% of people who reach the base camp make it to the top.

Illimani is more than just a mountain to the people of La Paz. In Aymara culture, it is seen as an "apu." This means it is a spirit that acts as a guardian. It is thought to protect the balance between the high plateau and the valleys. The mountain also provides water for the people below. Glaciers on the north and east sides melt into rivers. These include the Choqueyapu and Katari rivers.
