Illimani is a massive and famous mountain located in Bolivia.

It is part of the Cordillera Real, which is a subrange of the Andes. The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world. They stretch about 7,000 km along the western edge of South America. Illimani sits southeast of La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia. It is the highest mountain in the Cordillera Real. It is also the second-highest mountain in the entire country of Bolivia.

The mountain sits in a unique geographical position. It acts as a bridge between two different environments. To the west lies the high and arid Altiplano plateau. To the east are the deep, humid valleys of the Yungas region. This location allows for many different microclimates. These are small areas where the weather and environment are distinct. The western slopes are cold and semi-arid. The eastern face is more of a subtropical highland. This intersection supports many plants and animals adapted to cool, wet conditions.

Geologists explain that Illimani formed through a process called the Andean orogeny. This happened because of the subduction of the Nazca plate. This plate moved underneath the South American plate. This movement caused the Earth's crust to fold and rise. The mountain is composed of metamorphic rock and intrusive granites. Specifically, it contains a lot of granodiorite. The massif consists of four major peaks arranged on a north-south axis. The southernmost peak is the highest point of the mountain. Some people thought it was an extinct stratovolcano, but that is not correct.

The name Illimani comes from the Aymara or possibly Quechua languages. A common interpretation is that it means "place of light." This likely refers to how the snow reflects sunlight. Other ideas suggest it means "where the sun rises" or "the eldest son." In Aymara culture, the mountain is more than just rock and ice. It is revered as an apu. An apu is a mythological tutelary spirit. People view Illimani as a guardian of La Paz. It is believed to protect the balance between the Altiplano and the valleys.

Glaciers cover much of the northern and eastern faces of the mountain. These glaciers are found at elevations below 5,000 meters. They are fed by precipitation from moist air coming from the Amazon. These melting glaciers provide water for several important streams. These include the Choqueyapu and Katari rivers. These rivers flow toward the La Paz valley and the Altiplano. However, these tropical glaciers have been retreating in recent decades. This is due to rising temperatures and changes in regional precipitation.

Mountaineers are frequently drawn to Illimani because of its technical terrain. The first major attempt was in 1877 by Charles Wiener and his team. They reached a southeastern sub-summit and named it "Pic de Paris." The first recorded successful ascent was in 1898 by William Martin Conway. Today, the standard route climbs the west ridge of the main summit. This climb usually takes four days to complete. It is a difficult trek, but many people succeed. Approximately 60% of those who reach the base camp make it to the summit.

Because of its height and location, the mountain has seen several accidents. There are no official records, but reports since 1973 show about three fatalities per decade. These incidents involve climbers facing harsh weather or avalanches. The mountain has also been involved in aviation accidents. In 1985, Eastern Air Lines Flight 980 struck the mountain. The Boeing 727 was descending toward La Paz at the time. All 29 people on board died in the crash. The flight recorders were not found until 2017. This remains the highest-altitude case of controlled flight into terrain in commercial aviation history.
