Ibiza and the nearby island of Formentera are known as the Pityuses. This name means the "Pine Islands" in Greek. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status recognizes its historical and cultural importance to the world.

The island's climate is classified as hot semi-arid. This means the weather is typically warm, sunny, and dry.

Ibiza receives between 2,700 and 2,800 hours of sunshine every year. The average annual temperature is about 18 degrees Celsius. During the summer, the air can become hot and humid. This humidity creates high dew points, which makes the heat feel muggy. In contrast, the winters from November to April are mild and rainy. These seasonal rains cause the entire island to turn green. The sea temperature remains suitable for beach weather for seven months, from May to November.

Ibiza has a complex history involving many different civilizations.

Phoenician settlers established a port on the island in 654 BC. They used the island as a major trading post for salt, wool, and fish sauce called garum. Later, the island came under Carthaginian control. During the Second Punic War, the island remained loyal to Carthage despite attacks by the Scipio brothers. Eventually, Ibiza negotiated a treaty with the Romans. This allowed the island to keep its Carthaginian institutions and coinage. It later became an official Roman municipality.

Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, different groups ruled the island. The Vandals and Byzantines held power before the Muslims conquered Ibiza in 902. Under Islamic rule, the island was known as Yabisah. It was closely connected to the city of Dénia. In 1110, the Norwegian King Sigurd I invaded the islands during a crusade. Later, in 1159, a Norman fleet from the Kingdom of Sicily sacked the island. In 1235, the Crown of Aragon conquered Ibiza. This led to the deportation of the local Muslim population and the arrival of Christians from Girona.

The island is divided into five distinct municipalities.

These include Vila d'Eivissa, which is also known as Ibiza Town. Other municipalities are Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Sant Joan de Labritja, and Santa Eulària des Riu. The total land area of these municipalities is 572.6 square kilometers. As of early 2023, the total population was approximately 159,180 people. The Ibiza Island Council, or Consell Insular d'Eivissa, serves as the local government.

Modern Ibiza is famous for its massive tourism industry. The island is a global center for nightlife and electronic dance music.

Many tourists visit during the summer season, which peaks between June and September. In 2012, nearly 6 million people traveled through Ibiza Airport. This high volume of visitors has created challenges for the island. There are often shortages of potable water and overstretched infrastructure. To manage this, the government introduced a Sustainable Tourism Tax on July 1, 2016. The government also placed a moratorium on building in certain areas to protect the land.

Tourism development on the island has seen both great success and notable failures. Some projects, like the large super clubs, have been very successful. However, other projects have been left as ruins.

For example, the Festival Club in the hills near Sant Josep only operated for three summers in the early 1970s. The abandoned ruins of such clubs are scattered across the landscape. These sites reflect the transient nature of club-oriented tourism. Local artists have even studied how mass tourism impacts the natural and cultural landscapes of the island. This ongoing development continues to shape the character of Ibiza today.
