It is the seventh largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The island's capital is Palma. Palma is also the capital of the Balearic Islands. This region has been an autonomous community of Spain since 1983. Two smaller islands sit near the coast of Mallorca. These are Cabrera, located southeast of Palma, and Dragonera, located to the west.

The name Mallorca likely comes from the Classical Latin term "insula maior." This means "larger island." In Medieval Latin, it was called Maiorca. This name helped distinguish it from Menorca, which means "smaller one."

The geology of Mallorca is linked to the Betic Cordillera mountains.

The island is an extension of these fold mountains in Andalusia. Most of the land consists of marine sediments from the Mesozoic era. These sediments formed calcareous rocks, which are often fossiliferous. These rocks formed when the African Plate subducted beneath the Eurasian Plate. This tectonic movement caused the mountains to rise and the land to fold. Tectonic shifts eventually severed the connection to the mainland.

The island features limestone and dolomitic rocks in its mountains. These include the Serra de Tramuntana and the Serres de Llevant. Because limestone dissolves in water, the island has many karst areas. In the center, the soil has a reddish color. This color comes from ferrous clays found in the Pla de Mallorca.

The climate on the island is classified as Mediterranean.

This means summers are hot, bright, and dry. Winters are typically mild and relatively wet. The two wettest months are October and November. Rainfall is much higher in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. In these mountains, winters can be colder and wetter. Brief episodes of snow sometimes occur on the Puig Major. The sea temperature stays relatively warm throughout the year. In August, the average sea temperature reaches about 26.0 degrees Celsius.

Humans first colonized Mallorca during the 3rd millennium BC.

These people were associated with the Bell Beaker culture. They built stone structures known as talaiots. This period is called the Talaiotic culture. The arrival of humans caused the extinction of three native mammals. These were the dwarf goat-antelope, the giant dormouse, and a specific type of shrew. These animals had lived on the island for over five million years. Archaeologists recently found a 3,200-year-old Bronze Age sword at a Talaiot site. This sword was discovered in the Puigpunyent area.

Many different empires have controlled the island over time. The Phoenicians arrived around the eighth century BC. Later, the island fell under the control of Carthage. The Romans took over the island in 123 BC. Under Roman rule, the towns of Pollentia and Palmaria were founded.

The economy relied on salt mining, olives, and wine. Mallorcan soldiers were even famous as slingers in Roman legions. After the Romans, the Vandals captured the island in 427. The Eastern Roman Empire later recaptured it in 534. In 902, the island was conquered by Muslim forces. They made the island part of the Emirate of Córdoba. The capital, Palma, was then called Medina Mayurqa.

Muslim rule brought many improvements to the island. They used irrigation to help with agriculture. Later, the island faced many different rulers, including the Almoravides and Almohads. In 1229, King James I of Aragon invaded the island. He landed at Santa Ponça with 15,000 men and 1,500 horses. He eventually annexed the island as the Regnum Maioricae.

For many centuries, the island dealt with attacks from Barbary corsairs. To stay safe, people built fortified churches and watchtowers. Eventually, Mallorca became part of the unified Spanish monarchy. This happened after the War of the Spanish Succession ended in 1715. The Nueva Planta decrees made Mallorca part of the Spanish province of Baleares in 1716.

In the modern era, Mallorca has become a major tourist destination.

This industry began to grow significantly in the 1950s. Many people from mainland Spain moved there to work in services. The city of Palma has grown very large because of this boom. The Palma de Mallorca Airport is one of the busiest in Spain. In 2017, it served 28 million passengers. Most tourists come from the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Recent urban plans, like the Pla Mirall, have also brought workers from Africa and South America. Today, the island remains a central part of the Balearic Islands' identity.
