This area is part of a lush region called Green Spain.

The climate in Asturias is defined as a maritime climate. This weather pattern is heavily influenced by the Gulf Stream. Because of this, the region receives high precipitation throughout the year. It also sees much less sunshine than other parts of Spain. Most seasons are very moderate. Temperatures often average in the lower 20s Celsius.

The high mountains serve a specific purpose in the weather. They act as a barrier to block southerly winds. This makes heat waves very rare in the region. Winters are mild near the sea level. However, snow remains in the mountains from October until May.

Human history in Asturias stretches back to the earliest eras. Homo erectus and Neanderthals inhabited the land first. During the Upper Paleolithic, people created cave paintings in the eastern sections. Later, the Iron Age brought the influence of Celtic tribes. These people were known as the Astures. They lived in fortified hill towns called castros. This Celtic influence still exists in local names for mountains and rivers.

The Romans arrived under Augustus between 29 and 19 BC. They subdued the Astures, though they never fully conquered them.

In the 8th century, Asturias became a vital refuge. As the Moors conquered much of Spain, the mountains provided safety. Christian nobles fled to this region. In 722, a de facto independent kingdom called the Regnum Asturorum was established. This kingdom became the cradle of the Reconquista.

By the 10th century, the Kingdom of Asturias transitioned into the Kingdom of León. During the Middle Ages, the territory's geographic isolation meant historical records were often scarce. In the 14th century, the Principality of Asturias was established following the rebellion of Prince Henry. Since 1388, the heir to the Spanish throne has held the title Prince or Princess of Asturias.

The region underwent massive changes during the Industrial Revolution after 1830. This was driven by the discovery of coal mines and iron factories. These were located in the Nalón and Caudal mining basins. This era also saw significant migration to the Americas. People who found wealth in places like Argentina or Mexico often returned home. These successful travelers were known as Indianos. Their wealth helped build many large modernista villas and public libraries across the land.

In the 20th century, Asturias played a role in the Spanish Civil War. In 1934, miners led an armed uprising. This was a response to the rise of the CEDA party. Following the war, the region was briefly called the Province of Oviedo. Its full name was restored in 1977 after democracy returned.

The current president is Adrián Barbón. While industry remains important, the region also focuses on conservation. It protects its vast green spaces and natural parks to maintain its unique environment.
