Some of these are very old. Later, the Romans ruled the island. They built towns like Pollentia. The island also had many Muslim rulers. They improved farming with new ways to water plants.

The weather is often hot and dry in the summer. The sun is very bright. In the winter, it is mild and wet. The mountains can even get snow. The Serra de Tramuntana is a big mountain range. The soil in the middle of the island looks red. This is because of special clay in the ground.
