It sits off the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The island is part of a group called the Balearic Islands. You might also hear it called one of the Pine Islands. This name comes from the Greek people who lived there long ago. Ibiza is the third largest island in the Balearic group. However, it is the second-largest by how many people live there.

Most days are very sunny and dry. There are about 2,700 to 2,800 hours of sunshine every year. In the summer, the air can feel hot and muggy. This happens because of high dew points. In the winter, from November to April, it rains a little more. These rains turn the whole island green. The sea stays warm for about seven months. This makes it great for beach weather from May to November.

Ibiza has a very long and busy history.

Phoenician settlers built a port there in 654 BC. They used the island to trade things like salt, wool, and fish sauce. Later, the Romans made the island an official municipality. Many different groups have ruled the island over the years. This includes the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the Muslims. In the 13th century, the island was conquered by the Crown of Aragon. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many people visit Ibiza for its famous summer nightlife.

Tourists come to hear electronic dance music at big clubs. This brings millions of people to the island each year. In 2012, nearly 6 million people traveled through the Ibiza Airport. Because so many people visit, the island can face hard jobs. There are sometimes shortages of fresh water. To help, the government started a Sustainable Tourism Tax in 2016. This helps manage the many visitors and the local land.

There are many different towns and places to see on the island.

The largest settlements are Ibiza Town, Santa Eulària des Riu, and Sant Antoni de Portmany. The island is made up of five different municipalities. One of these is Sant Josep de sa Talaia. Some old buildings, like the Festival Club, now sit as ruins in the hills. These ruins show how the island's tourism has changed over time. The island's government is called the Ibiza Island Council.
