Hyposmia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hyposmia is a term for having a reduced ability to smell. It means a person can still detect odors, but they are faint. Some people have a related condition called anosmia. Anosmia means a person cannot detect any odors at all. Hyposmia is a type of olfactory dysfunction. This is a way to describe problems with the sense of smell. It is much more common than losing smell completely.

This condition happens in a few different ways. Sometimes, it is caused by a physical blockage in the nose. Allergies, nasal polyps, or infections can cause swelling. This swelling stops odor molecules from reaching receptors in the nose. Other times, the problem is in the brain. The brain may have trouble processing the signals it receives. This can happen if the neural pathways are affected.

Doctors use different ways to find the cause of hyposmia. They often start by looking at a person's medical history. They might also use standardized smell identification tests. These tests help tell different smell disorders apart. One test used in studies is the Pocket Smell Test. This test asks people to identify specific scents. These scents include food, household items, and warning odors.

Studies show that hyposmia is quite common in the United States. In 2012, about 9.8 million people aged 40 or older had hyposmia. Another 3.4 million people had anosmia or severe hyposmia. The chance of having these issues rises as people get older. For example, the rate for severe loss rises from 0.3% at age 40 to 14.1% at age 80. Some factors, like being male, are linked to higher rates.

Having a weak sense of smell can change daily life. It can make food taste dull or less distinct. This might cause a person to lose their appetite. It can also create safety risks in the home. People might not notice the smell of smoke or gas leaks. They might also not smell spoiled food. Knowing these signs helps people stay safe and healthy.
