Bell's palsy

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bell's palsy is a condition that causes facial paralysis. This means a person cannot control their facial muscles on one side. Most people find the weakness is only temporary. It often improves significantly over a few weeks. Symptoms can be mild or they can be quite severe. You might see muscle twitching or a drooping eyebrow. In rare cases, it can affect both sides of the face. Some people also feel pain around their ear or notice a change in taste.

This condition happens because of a problem with the facial nerve. This is also known as cranial nerve VII. This nerve helps you blink, smile, and frown. It also helps you taste food on the front part of your tongue. It even helps your ear dampen loud sounds. When the nerve has a problem, sounds might seem too loud. This is called hyperacusis. Doctors think a virus might cause the nerve to swell. This swelling creates pressure inside a narrow bony canal. The pressure stops the nerve from sending signals to the muscles.

A Scottish surgeon named Charles Bell first described this. He lived from 1774 to 1842. He was the one who found the link between the nerve and the condition. Even though we know the nerve is involved, the exact cause is still unknown. Some people think a virus causes the swelling. Others think it might be related to things like diabetes or pregnancy. It can happen to anyone at any age.

Bell's palsy is very common for one-sided nerve paralysis. It accounts for about 70% of those cases. It happens to 1 to 4 people out of every 10,000 each year. About 1.5% of all people will have it at some point. Most people between ages 15 and 60 are affected. Males and females are affected at the same rate. Signs of getting better often start within 14 days. Most people recover completely within six months.

Doctors must rule out other things to make this diagnosis. They check to make sure it is not a stroke or a tumor. A stroke usually allows you to move your forehead. Bell's palsy is different because it affects the whole side. To help, doctors might use corticosteroids to reduce swelling. These medicines work best if given within three days. It is also very important to protect the eye. If the eye cannot close, you should use eye drops or an eyepatch.
