A stroke is a serious medical emergency. It happens when blood cannot reach part of the brain. When this happens, brain cells can die. This causes parts of the brain to stop working.

Ischemic Stroke

There are two main types of stroke. The first is an ischemic stroke. This type makes up about 87% of all strokes. It happens when a blood vessel gets blocked. A blood clot can stop the flow of blood.

The second type is a hemorrhagic stroke. This occurs when a blood vessel breaks or leaks. Blood can pool in the brain or the space around it. This can cause a very severe headache.

Understanding how a stroke works helps us recognize it. In an ischemic stroke, a blockage stops blood from moving. This can be caused by a clot forming in one spot. It can also be caused by a clot traveling from elsewhere.

In a hemorrhagic stroke, the process is different. A blood vessel might rupture or burst. This can happen because of an aneurysm. An aneurysm is a weak spot in a vessel wall. When it breaks, blood leaks into the brain tissue. This increases the pressure inside the skull. This pressure can also compress the brain.

Doctors use many tools to study strokes. They often start with a physical exam. They might use a CT scan to see if there is bleeding. A CT scan can also help rule out some issues. However, an ischemic stroke might not show up on a CT scan right away.

Doctors may also use an MRI scan. They might perform an ECG to check the heart. Blood tests help find causes or risk factors. If symptoms last less than 24 hours, it is called a TIA. A TIA is often called a mini-stroke. Some people even call a stroke a "brain attack" to show it is urgent.

There are many important facts about stroke numbers. In 2023, 15 million people worldwide had a stroke. In 2021, strokes were the third biggest cause of death. They were responsible for about 10% of total deaths. In 2015, stroke was the second most frequent cause of death. It caused about 6.3 million deaths that year.

About 3.0 million deaths came from ischemic strokes. About 3.3 million deaths came from hemorrhagic strokes. Many people who have a stroke are over 65 years old. In 2015, about 42.4 million people were living after having a stroke.

Learning the signs can help people get help fast. People use the word FAST to remember. F stands for facial drooping. A stands for arm weakness. S stands for speech difficulty. T stands for time to call for help.

Some people use BE FAST. This adds balance and eyesight to the list. Sudden trouble with balance or blurry vision are signs. High blood pressure is the most significant risk factor. Other risks include smoking or diabetes. If a stroke is found early, doctors can use medicine to help. They may also use stroke rehabilitation to help people recover.
