Many people suffer from this. It can change how a person looks or breathes. Most people have a good outcome after healing.

When a nose breaks, several things can happen. You might see swelling or bruising. There may be bleeding from the nose. Some people see bruises around their eyes.

It might be hard to breathe through the nose. A doctor must check for a septal hematoma. This is a buildup of blood inside the nose. It happens in about 5% of cases. This specific injury needs urgent treatment.

Doctors use different ways to find a break. They usually look at the nose during a physical exam. They ask if the nose looks crooked. They also ask if breathing is difficult.

Sometimes they use an X-ray or a CT scan. These scans are helpful if other facial injuries are suspected. Doctors group fractures into three types. Type 1 is a simple break in the nasal bones. Types 2 and 3 involve other facial bones or the nasal septum.

There are many ways a nose can break. Common causes include falls or car accidents. Sports injuries and fighting also cause them.

In older people, a loss of balance can cause a fall. Young men in their 20s are affected most often. A break across the septum is a Jarjavay fracture. A vertical break is called a Chevallet fracture. These names help doctors describe the injury.

Healing takes time and care. Doctors often suggest ice and pain medicine. If the nose is crooked, they may use closed reduction. This means they move the bone by hand.

Adults should get this within 10 days. Children heal faster and need it within 4 days. The nose becomes stable in 3 to 5 weeks. Full bone fusion takes 4 to 8 weeks. This is how the body repairs itself.
