How do you know if a nose is broken? You might see swelling or bruises. You may see bleeding from the nose. It might be hard to breathe. Some people see bruises around their eyes too.

A doctor will look at the nose. They may use an X-ray to see the bone. They must check for a septal hematoma. This is a buildup of blood inside the nose. This needs quick help.

Most broken noses heal well. You can use ice and medicine for the pain. If the nose looks crooked, a doctor may fix it. This is called a closed reduction. This means moving the bone by hand. Adults should get this within 10 days. Children may need it within 4 days. The bone will be stable in 3 to 5 weeks. It takes 4 to 8 weeks for the bone to fuse back together.
