A mandibular fracture is a break in your jaw bone.

This often happens from an injury. You might fall on your chin or get hit on the side. Most cases happen to men in their 30s. Sometimes, the bone breaks in two places at once.

When the jaw breaks, it can cause many signs. You might feel pain or swelling. Your teeth might feel loose or not line up right. This is called malocclusion. It means your teeth do not meet correctly. You might also feel numbness in your chin or lip.

Some breaks happen in the condyle, which is near your ear. These can cause bleeding inside the ear canal.

Doctors must find where the break is. They use CT scans to see the bone clearly. These scans take many pictures to make a 3D view.

Some breaks are simple, meaning the bone is in one piece. Other breaks are comminuted. This means the bone has shattered into many small pieces. Doctors may use surgery to help the bone heal correctly.
