The human skull has eight bones. These bones form a hard shell. This shell protects your brain. A skull fracture is a break in these bones. This usually happens from a hard hit.

The second type is a depressed fracture. This happens when pieces of bone push inward. This can press on the brain. A doctor might use surgery to fix this.

The third type is a diastatic fracture. This happens at the sutures. Sutures are the lines where skull bones meet. These breaks make the gaps wider. This often happens to young children.

The fourth type is a basilar fracture. This break is at the base of the skull. These are rare. They happen when a very strong force hits the head.

Some breaks are also called compound fractures. This is when a cut lets the outside world touch the inside of the skull. This can let germs in. This makes an infection more likely.
