Anosmia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Anosmia is the name for when a person cannot detect one or more smells. This is often called smell blindness. It is different from hyposmia, which is when someone can only smell things weakly. Anosmia can be a temporary problem or it can be permanent. Some people are born this way, which is called congenital anosmia. This usually happens because of genes or how the nose develops. Other people get it later in life, which is called acquired anosmia.

There are many ways the sense of smell can stop working. Sometimes, the lining of the nose gets swollen or inflamed. This can happen because of a sinus infection or nasal polyps. Polyps are small growths that can block the nasal passages. Other times, the problem is in the brain or the nerves. A head injury can damage the olfactory nerve. This nerve carries smell signals to the brain. Damage to the parts of the brain that process smell can also cause it.

Scientists and doctors have studied this for a long time. The word comes from Ancient Greek words meaning "without smell." In the United States, about 3% of people over age 40 have anosmia. This number can go up as people get much older. In 2012, data showed that rates rise from 0.3% for people in their 40s to 14.1% for those over 80. Many famous people have lived with this, like the poet William Wordsworth. Even the 15th-century ruler Lorenzo de' Medici had anosmia.

Losing your sense of smell can be a hard job for many people. It can be dangerous because you might not smell a gas leak or a fire. You might also not smell food that has gone bad. Some people feel very sad when they lose a smell they love. This might be the smell of grass or a grandparent's attic. It can even make food seem less tasty. In some cases, it can lead to feelings of depression.

Doctors use different ways to help people with anosmia. If the nose is swollen, they might use medicine called glucocorticoids. These medicines help reduce inflammation in the nasal lining. If a person has nasal polyps, a doctor might use surgery to remove them. For people born without smell, there is currently no known cure. However, scientists are testing new ideas. They once used gene therapy to help mice with a specific type of congenital anosmia.
