life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people cannot smell. This is called anosmia. It can happen for a short time or last forever. This loss can be temporary or permanent.

Some people are born without smell. This is called congenital anosmia. It often comes from genes. These people may not know they are different. They might even pretend to smell when they are kids. They might think everyone else smells things too.

Other people get anosmia later in life. This is called acquired anosmia. It can happen from a cold or a head injury. It can also happen from brain diseases. Some people may lose smell in just one nostril. This often happens after a small bump to the head.

Losing smell can be dangerous. You might not smell a fire or a gas leak. You might not smell food that has gone bad. It can also make food taste less good. Some people feel sad when they lose a smell they love. This might be the smell of grass or a loved one.

Doctors can help some people. They might use medicine to stop swelling in the nose. They may also use surgery to remove nasal polyps. These polyps are small growths in the nose.
