Hyposmia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes people have a hard time smelling. We call this hyposmia. It means your sense of smell is weak. Some people have anosmia. That means they cannot smell anything at all.

Hyposmia can happen for many reasons. It can come from allergies or nasal polyps. These are growths in the nose. A viral infection or head injury can also cause it. Sometimes, it is a sign of other things. It can be an early sign of Parkinson's disease. It can also be a sign of Alzheimer's disease.

Why does this happen? It might be a blockage in the nose. This stops odor molecules from reaching your receptors. Receptors are tiny parts that detect smells. It can also happen in the brain. The brain may have trouble reading smell signals.

This can change how you live. Food might taste dull or less distinct. You might not feel as hungry. It can also be a safety risk. You may not smell smoke or gas leaks. In 2012, many people in the US had this. It is more common in older adults.
