Hypogeusia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes, people have a hard time tasting food. This is called hypogeusia. It means your sense of taste is weak. Many things can cause this change.

COVID-19 is one cause. It affects the nerves in your body. This sickness can change how you taste. It can also change how you smell. These are often early signs of the virus.

Cancer in the mouth can also cause it. This can affect sweet or salty tastes. It often makes bitter tastes hard to find. This happens because tumors can block the taste parts on the tongue. Some treatments for cancer can also hurt taste cells. These treatments include surgery or radiation.

Other things can cause weak taste. Not having enough zinc in your body can do this. A sickness called chronic rhinosinusitis can also be a cause. This is a long-term sinus issue. People with Parkinson's disease may also have trouble. Their taste receptors, or the parts that feel taste, do not work right. This often affects bitter tastes most of all.
