There are different species within this genus. The first known species is H. lindae. Its name honors Linda, the wife of Keith Stewart Thomson. Thomson was the scientist who described this fish. A second species, H. udlezinye, was named in February 2023. This second species was discovered in the Waterloo Farm lagerstätte. A lagerstätte is a sedimentary deposit that contains very well-preserved fossils. The remains for H. udlezinye included a skull and a shoulder girdle.

Estimating the size of Hyneria is a complex task for paleontologists. For H. lindae, scientists use different pieces of evidence. An isolated cleithrum, which is a bone in the shoulder girdle, suggests a large individual. The largest complete jaw reaches a certain size, but a larger fragment exists. This fragment might be twice as long as the complete jaw. If that fragment belongs to Hyneria, the fish could reach 3.5 meters in length. That is roughly 11 feet long. For H. udlezinye, the largest specimen is estimated to be about 2 meters long.

The history of these discoveries began in Pennsylvania, United States. Fossils were found at two different localities. One site was between the villages of North Bend and Hyner. Another site was located near Emporium. These fossils were part of the Catskill Formation within the Red Hill Shale. They originally consisted of a partial, disarticulated skull and shoulder fragments. Most of what we know came from a renewed collecting effort in 1993. This effort discovered an abundance of new material for scientists to study.
