Hyneria

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Hyneria was a huge prehistoric fish. It lived in fresh water long ago. This fish lived during the Famennian stage of the Devonian period. It was a lobe-finned fish. This means its fins had fleshy parts.

This fish was a top predator in its home. It played a big role in its watery world.

How did this fish hunt in dark water? The water it lived in was likely murky. This made it hard to see. Hyneria had large sensory canals to help it. These canals helped it detect prey.

Its skull had heavy, decorated bones. The lower jaw was long and shallow. Its teeth were stout and strong. Some teeth were fangs over 5 centimeters long.

Its body was covered in cycloid scales.

People found the first fossils in Pennsylvania. They were found near the village of Hyner. The name Hyneria comes from that village. The species name H. lindae honors a wife. She was the wife of Keith Stewart Thomson. He was the person who described the fish.

These first fossils were parts of a skull. They also included parts of the shoulder.

Many facts tell us about its size. One species, H. lindae, could reach 3.5 meters. That is about 11 feet long. A large jaw fragment was also found. It might belong to a different fish.

Another species is named H. udlezinye. Scientists named it in February 2023. It was found in the Waterloo Farm lagerstätte. This species was found in South Africa. It had a skull and shoulder girdle.

Hyneria is a very important find. It is the largest lobe-finned fish in the Red Hill Shale. The fossils came from the Catskill Formation. This was part of the Red Hill Shale.

Most fossils were found in 1993. A new effort found much more material then. We can learn how life changed through these bones. They show us how big fish once lived.
